Chick Corea and Return to Forever

I think Chick was an early adopter on Moogs but not sure

Whos Chick right?
hahaha

OK well, so Im old, screw you guys

This is called Medieval Overture from the album Romantic Warrior

Romantic Warrior is a superb album. I also like MusicMagic a lot.
Lot’s of great synth playing. Chick uses also alot of ARPs.
That kind of quality music just isn’t made anymore…

he uses a minimoog in the bootleg dvd i have from the early 70’s

Romantic Warrior was the best RTF album, IMHO. I agree that they don’t make 'em like that anymore, and that’s too bad.

Without going through his back catalog, I can tell you for certain that Chick has used synthesizers by ARP, Moog, and Yamaha. I know there are other manufacturers represented in Chick’s keyboard arsonnel as well, but the equipment listed in the album credits often isn’t that specific.

For example, ‘Behind the Mask’, a Chick Corea Electric Band recording from 1991, lists these instruments:
Minimoog
Synclavier
Prophet VS (Sequential)
SY99, SY77, KX5, TX802 (Yamaha)
PX100, SX1000, HX1000, RMX250, Midiboard (Kurzweil)
Proteus, Proformance (Emu)
Super Jupiter (Roland)
Waveframe (Korg)
Rhodes
Yamaha Piano

I take this to mean that Chick will use whatever instrument he feels is necessary for the tune.

Yea thats my favorite too

Back in those days when they were a fairly new idea it was tough to get good musicality out of those old synthesizers, in the hands of one guy it might sound awful but in the hands of someone like Chick they could really sing.
Sort of like the wah wah pedal on guitar.

He also used A Moog system 55.
They were cool sounds on that album I must admit.
I have loads of early RTF CD’s.
MUSICMAGIC is a great album. Very Bigband orientated with Gayle Moran(his lady) on vocals..
Must say…how crazy is the solo on
“Duel of the tyrant and the Jester”?
Incredible moog solo…
When I heard it as a kid, my first reaction was…
"This guy is all over the place…out of tune, not even melodic enough to whistle…
After a few years of listening to him, I was drawn to how he managed to turn the phrases inside out…along with my poor brain too.

Still, they don’t make them like that anymore…
Shame really.
I have my own prog project called TOYSHOP MURDERS and to be honest…
I think you can’t beat a good ol’ Moog solo…
PuH! Who needs guitars eh!..

Hello,

In the early/mid seventies, a NY radio station (WRVR 106.7) played jazz fusion like RTF.
They played RTF songs from releases like the Where Have I Known You Before album, and the track ‘Vulcan Worlds’ got most air play. The melody from the track is one of the most memorable from that period, for me. ‘Song To the Pharoah Kings’ was another favorite.
From the Romantic Warrior release, the track ‘Sorceress’ received most air play. It grew on me most, even though I listened to Duel of Jester & Tyrant most.
Chick Corea had quite a few synths in his setup by then, with the Arp and Moog mono synths predominating most of the leads.
He also did endorsements for the Micro (w/Herbie Hancock) and Multimoog.
In the mid 80’s, there was one live rig consisting of OB-Xa, Memorymoog, Model D, Yamaha GS1, and several other DX pieces. He used as the KX5 as a remote for these in live venues.
During the Elektric Band period, he also uses a laundry list of gear (including Synclav and Fairlight) however, the Yamaha stuff (TX816, etc) seemed to be the dominant element in his synth voices.
Before the Behind the Mask release, he got the SY-99 and used it heavily (though not exclusively) on that release. The track ‘99 Flavors’ was a reference to the new instrument.
He did an endorsement for the board, in which Yamaha plugged the BTM release.

btw: There were a few birthdays in addition to Dr. Moog’s this week.
Sun Ra’s was the 22nd, Artie Shaw also the 23rd, and Miles Davis on the 25th.

Regards,

Lawrence
