I got a great deal on a used voyager, but I’m not a fan of the panel backlight color. I love everything else about it.
Does anyone know if the backlight EL panel is a part (or parts) that can be replaced with a different color? Or is the color coming from the front panel sticker? I haven’t yet opened it up to see.
I do a lot of electronics work, so technically I’m fine with doing a replacement if it’s possible. I’m also not concerned about opening something up and tinkering a bit. Even a Voyager. (well, except for that 6 layer voice board).
I found this out because mine front panel sticker is lifting / bubbling in a number of places. I can easily take off the whole middle white voyager sticker, and with some slight effort, likely the rest.
the blacklight is a separate layer from the adhesive overlay: chassis metal, then blacklight ribbon, then top adhesive overlay
where the blacklight flat ribbon changes 90 degrees into the chassis, there may be a sticker bump, like near the touch surface - press down to reseat or place weight on it overnight
i don’t think the color is changeable, you would have to undo all the top panel hardware (knob shaft lock nuts) then rip the overlay off, and that would most likely damage or tear the really fragile blacklight ribbon
you might try re-glueing with something safe that does not melt the plastics
Mine does not appear to be set up like that. The whole sticker, which includes the backlight layer integrated, is coming off of the metal in a number of places. I haven’t seen where it goes into the chassis yet. The bubbles are all over.
The lifting is hard to photograph because it’s in the middle of the panels in most cases and you can feel it more easily than photograph it. The central panel is the worst of the bunch, though. It comes right off with no effort.
This can likely be fixed with glue if I want to, but I emailed service last night to see if I can get replacement stickers (I’d pay for them) in a better color anyway.
Greetings, Pete! Judging from the pics, if that’s a maple wood body with Jade green lighting, then I’m afraid there is no ‘better’ color only one you may like better personally. Goofing aside, I’ve got two Voyagers, a Maple Jade and one of the recent (blue) Aluminums and love the hell out of both…duophony w/ poly chain is especially terrifying. Finding this interesting and looking forward to see how this progresses for you, thanks!
However, if you are having the entire two layers of overlay and backlight peel away from the unit entirely as shown in the above post, this will require the attention of an Authorized Moog Tech to correct properly.
