Brush w/ greatness: Bernie Worrell

Imagine the luck. I attended a Victor Wooten clinic in central NJ last week when Victor turns to the crowd and acknowledges the master whom was sitting in the middle of the crowd.

After some reluctance, he finally gave-in and stepped up to a Yamaha Motif that they dragged over for him and jammed with Victor, his drummer, and a sax player that Victor has on tour with him.

What a thrill. He’s a gentleman and so modest. Lead an improv song throwing in all sorts of tidbits along the way and knocking the crowd dead on the last chord.

Have it on tape and will post it up on my web site when I get a chance but that’s it for me. Never thought I would be that close to Victor and his bro Reggie let alone be in the same room as Bernie at the same time.

Listening to him speak, all I could think about was that scene in the Moog Movie where he, Wakeman and Bob Moog laughed it up back stage at one of the last Moogfests that Bob attended.
.

Thats awesome!
As A bass player, I have to say I can tolerate Wooten in low doses before he makes me want to shoot my basses with my sks.

He came to Little Rock a few times, and I had the opportunity to meet him where I got all of the Flektones autographs, and the second time he came through ie was just him and his drummer and I got to meet him a second time. I think that I love this about Wooten, he isn’t aloof. He plays fan oriented shows and really loves meeting young musicians and I think thats what I respect about Wooten the most. I really have respect for people of his calibre who are as good as they are without the arrogance and ego.

I love Bernie Worrell. Huge fan here. And Victor Wooten–don’t get me started. Great cover article in Downbeat. I love his book the Music Lesson–bought it after a Flecktones show a couple of years ago–really has some great ideas on musical expression and improvisation. Bernie’s been all about improv and he and Bill Laswell are really up there in my book as far as influences go.
