Best Techniques for using LP with Ableton Live?

Hey guys - here’s what I’d like to do in Ableton: record MIDI notes from my Little Phatty into an Ableton MIDI clip, and have those same notes loop and trigger the Little Phatty. Then, as it’s playing back and looping, I want to tweak the sound using the Phatty knobs.

I have this working, but there is still some unusual behavior, and it probably has something to with MIDI feedback. I currently have two standard MIDI cables connecting input to output between my audio interface and the LP. My Ableton track is set up with MIDI Input on Channel 1, and MIDI Out on Channel 2. On the Phatty, I have MIDI Input set to Channel 2, and MIDI Output set to Channel 1. The notes are getting recorded just fine, but when they play back, some undesirable things happen, like the LP’s cutoff resetting itself at the beginning of each loop. My goal is to have no CC information coming into the Phatty, just the MIDI notes. And I want to make things as clean and reliable as possible.

Hopefully this makes sense. I’m a brand-new Little Phatty owner, first post! Woop. Thanks,

NH

You could try setting MIDI Sync on Live for Slim: Track-on, Sync-on, Remote-off.
Since you have Remote to off you can tweak knobs on Phatty in realtime. Otherwise you get CC info from Live and will not work in a way you want.
I hope this will help!

Happy tweaking!

Hey folks, I figured this one out. Or at least a successful workaround. You can simply turn off outgoing MIDI CC messages in the MIDI section of the Little Phatty Master Mode preferences. That way, Ableton doesn’t record any CC information, and it won’t cause any knobs to jump when the notes are played back.

I discovered that even with “Remote” set to OFF in Ableton’s MIDI input, the Phatty still sends MIDI CC messages (I’m assuming these are the basic ones like volume and pitch bend). Ideally, I would be able to leave the Phatty’s MIDI CC output enabled and only choose specific CC messages to be passed to Ableton (like if I wanted to map the LP’s modulation knob as a Dry / Wet control for an Ableton effect). This is my next goal. Maybe I can use some MIDI filtering software to achieve that end.

Anyway feel free to jump in if anyone has more experience in this area.
