They did (give him an award). They gave him a purple (of course!) Little Phatty a few years back. I think he is still a special guest and I also think it was amazing, considering his condition, that he made it to the show this year.
I met him a few years back at my local Sam Ash during a Victor Wooten clinic. My understanding is that he lived out in Branchburg NJ at the time (I think he is in Washington state at the moment?). But Victor introduced him (he was blending in with the crowd if you can imagine that being possible) then coaxed him into playing some keyboards with his band. He was reluctant, but eventually gave in to the delight of the 30 or 40 people there.
I recorded it on my D90 and while the quality is not great, I think I’m going to post it sometime soon because he really is a character and a half and a wonderful, peaceful soul. I also saw him playing with the Talking Heads in Berkeley when I lived out there in the 80s.
My mother-in-law passed away earlier this year with the same terrible end. I hope he not in pain as she was and is with loved ones. The end is never easy.
