A friend of mine is an independent producer/engineer (he’s currently recording my band), and he recently asked me what I would charge to have another band he’s recording come into my house and use my synths to record some tracks. I know the other guys and trust them, so that’s not an issue. I just have NO idea what to charge. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? What would you recommend?
[synths to be used: Voyager, Phatty, Nord Lead 2x and Electro 2. plus 6 'foogers and EHX pedals. (and possibly my mixer and PA)]
If this is just a one time thing you could charge them an hourly fee or a single fee. It would be reasonable to charge <35 dollars per hour for friends. Id really figure it depending on how much time they took vs how many tracks they were going to record.
If they wanted to record a few tracks with your synths and it took them 30 minutes, thats not worth charging them a lot for. Buf if you had a studio full of instruments for a full band and they want to record a whole song on your gear then that’s different.
You should get paid at least what your friend charges for recording them.
If you have to do any engineering, consulting, synth programming or songwriting, I’d charge them more.
These things can last well into the night. Be sure you have a cutoff time if the wife will be coming home.
