Basic help setting up with Ableton please!

Hi guys

Im currently waiting on my Slim Phatty to be delivered - I cant wait and want to get started straight away

I’ve read numerous threads and checked out the manual online, but since this is my first hardware synth Id just like a bit of guidance please!

This is my setup at the mo
Macbook Pro with Ableton
M-Audio Midi Keyboard (USB to USB)

My main question is what I need an audio interface for?
Can I record myself playing the Slim Phatty on my midi keyboard without an audio interface? And if so can I record automation i.e twiddling the filter knobs etc without an interface?

Also the next step is to record audio I send from my laptop → slim phatty (mess around with the filter) then back to my laptop? I’m guessing I will definitely need an audio interface for this..?

If I do, will this interface be sufficient in terms of input/output?

Any help MUCH appreciated

Hi!
If you want to record it you need an interface. Usb is just for MIDI.
One thing that you should keep in mind is your MIDI connection from MIDI controller. If you run your controller to laptop and than to Slim you will get noticeable MIDI delay.
In my experience best way is to plug a MIDI cable from your controller to your Slim and at the same time you can control Slim with Live over USB cable.
With this setup you can for example run a drum loop from Live to audio in and you can program MIDI notes for your drumloop in Live to play the VCF and VCA on your Slim. This is really useful.
Phatty is not just a synth. It is great distortion/filter/VCA module to play with!
I love to run my guitars through it and control CV Gate in with envelope follower on my MF-101.
Just experiment! It always sounds good
Ou, and if you have any of MFs or CP, try CV in on Slim.
End if you have decent MIDI controller you can assign all the MIDI CCs to work with all the parameters in your Slim, so you do not need to got to Menu, but you can program sounds on your controller.
You should keep in mind the Lives MIDI setup.

I’d advise the following:

a) STAY AWAY from using the slims usb - don’t even plug it in - it’s evil and will cause you pain!
b) get a sound card / usb interface that supports midi - the midisports are dirt cheap (you need midi in AND out, so unless you have this on your controller keyboard you’re going to need a new box)
c) set up a midi track FROM: usb keyboard TO: midi channel A
c) set up a further midi track FROM midi A TO midi A
d) use the first midi track to record note information
e) use the second to record CC data
NB: you could use your controller keyboard to send CC info to the SP BUT that way you won’t get to use the SP physical interface itself, which is a real shame, cause it rocks!
f) create a new audio track with monitor set to on - when you’ve finished recording switch back to auto
f) make sure you make the following setting changes on the SP:
i) go into midi setup > press cursor to entre sub menu > set local contrl to OFF. Midi in to DIN, Midi out to DIN

And that should do it!

I’ve tried lots of setups and this is the only one that seems to work for me - i’m using a mac and a 2i2 USB interface like you and a midisport 2x2.

You can also set up the SP vst on the cc channel just root this to and from the midi a as well. I’ve had no end of trouble with the VST so i’ll send a screen shot of the settings if that would be helpful.
