Backlight Problem

When turning on my Voyager today I saw the backlight go dim for a few seconds, then go out completely. After about ten seconds it came back on. I didn’t touch or move a thing during any of this.

I played with the dimmer knob afterward and it’s working fine, so I’m pretty sure it’s not that.

Could it be a loose bulb? Why would it flicker if the Voyager wasn’t being touched?

I’m going to call Moog tomorrow, but if anyone has any ideas I’d sure like to read them.

Could it be the light dimmer pot?

I had two broken pots when it arrived last month, so it’s not completely out of the question.

Not a broken pot come to find out.

The pot was switched out and everything worked fine until a couple of days ago when it did the same thing.

The backlight inverter is bad. I shipped it back to Moog to be worked on again.

I hate not having it in my studio…

Hopefully that will be the end of any problems.

I’m having a similar problem, happened today for the first time though.
Instead of the blue back lit panel going down it goes to full bright and when it does so the dim control doesn’t react when turning it off. After about 5 minutes it worked normal again, very weird.
Now if this a backlight inverter issue as I’m reading here, I’m net very pleased to ship it back and fort to the US and would prefer fixing it myself if I get some instructions of course. Could this be a bad contact/plug or something?

Thanks for any info, cheers

You could switch out the inverter yourself if you’re good with soldering, but the steps are a bit complicated. I’d leave it to the pros.

Could this be a loose contact issue? Ive thinking to open it and have a look for any loose contacts/components since it happened a few times after I moved the voyager a bit.

That was the first thing I checked and was not the problem in my case, but it’s a good place to start.

I just had a look inside and found the middle gray connector out the 3 that connects the right board with the middle to be a bit loose, so I put it back in place, also found a screw loose that holds a gray wire in place on the back.
Anyhow after booting the voyager up again the back-light is completely out now. Before they went from dimmed to full bright at random moments then back to normal after a while. So my guess it’s the inverter as well. Hopefully moog can guide me through fixing it.

Hopefully you can do it yourself because not having your Voyager with you can be painful.

Absolutely, I could say it a thousand time a day what a great instrument this is, though most people I know never heard of it … they think I’m from some other planet if start talking about music and gear … lol

From what I remember, the steps for changing out the inverter are around 6 to 10, and involve soldering.

I send a tech support request a couple days ago, Ill see what happens, soldering is not a problem for me, though the inside of the moog looks a bit complicated

hmmm weirdness… when I booted up today the back-lights where full bright again and after an hour or so it still was, no matter if I use dim knob it doesn’t respond.
I just figured when I lift the unit up at the right side and put it back the back-lights suddenly work normal again… so my guess is that it might be a bad contact somewhere after all.
Any ideas where to start looking before I open it up again? How can I get access where the dim knob is located?

Thanks

Hey, I was wondering if anyone can confirm if I have the V3 or Pre V3 hardware or were there any other V3 hardware upgrades before the field upgrade with the smaller hardware came out?

I contacted Moog and told me I need the field upgrade to make room for the inverter if I wanted to fix my backlight problem with the quiet II technology.
Since the older version has the back-light dimmer pot on the right in some black harsh. So basically if I want to replace the pot I need to replace it as one piece with the wood included etc.
I feel its better to get my voyager completely up to date to the current versions than just do a pretty expensive repair.

So I took some pic’s of the inside to be sure. When I bought it used, the previous owner sold it to me as a V3 Hardware and V3 OS voyager.
The OS was indeed V3 and right now I use the latest 3.4 OS and firmware though if I compare the inside to the V3 and Pre V3 hardware I notice mine is different.
Moog confirmed that the pre V3 hardware will run the V3 OS, but with some hardware limitations.
At the time I bought it I didn’t know enough about the voyager and have trusted the previous owner his word on it, but now I feel a little owned…pwn

Yours looks different than mine. Here’s where my backlight (Ceelite) inverter box is located:

Hey Subtronik,
Thanks for showing, I appreciate it.
I got owned indeed :frowning: but ill get over it and save some more to get this baby up to date.

Cheers

Does anyone knows the best dealers in Belgium or close to it? I contacted the main distributor for Belgium and they charge over the top prices.
As example converted back in USD the field upgrade of 265$ they ask 430$ ex VAT. So I’m desperate to find an honest dealer here…
