I’m trying to find out if the Moog Modulars had any “back panels” to cut out dust etc…
could some kind modular owner have a look and let me know?
( and if possible give me a description..material etc?)
It would help me with the finishing of my DIY 55/3C project…
The Moogs did have rear covers.
On the 35 and 55, made from Masonite, that fiber stuff with the holes in it.
At least that’s what I’ve heard it called. (correct me someone?)
On the smaller C cabs, they had rear wood covers covered in the same vinyl as the cabinet.
The cabinet with the power supply sometimes got a meshed aluminum grill too.
(same material as the 930 power supply used, I think.)
There may be differences in Moogs through the years though.
By the time I see them, they’re often missing the rear covers.
Btw. What weird timing…
I just sat down here after fitting two pieces of Perspex (Plexiglas) to a couple Buchla 100 cabinets here.
I decided to completely block off the backs from dust, but allow a look in to see how the mults are wired, etc.
The power supplies are in another cabinet and the jack holes themselves will allow enough venting for these systems.
They don’t draw much current, thus they don’t create that much heat.
Better to keep drafts out from them too, since the VCOs aren’t temperature compensated well.
Thankyou Kev…its what I expected and makes sense to keep out grime and help with the VCO stability.
I think the Masonite you refer to is called “Hardboard” over here in the UK
if it is the same stuff and if it has holes its “Pegboard” (I could be wrong)
I noticed the Moog 55 on e-bay has a rear photo showing what must be the original back? (or they replaced it with similar)
Wasn’t Masonite used for the back covers on TVs and radios from the 50’s and 60’s? They either had a smooth finish, or were textured, and were usually perforated for ventilation.
