Automating the LP within Ableton Live

I was wondering if anyone had a solution on how to automate the parameters of the Little Phatty within Ableton Live? I cant seem to map any of the Midi parameters. Help Please?

You shouldn’t need to do any mapping; the LP already has a dedicated MIDI CC for every parameter. While it would be nice if they were all named their actual names within Live, it’s easy enough to refer to the list of CC numbers in the LP manual (“how the LP handles MIDI,” in the appendices). For example, filter cutoff is CC 19; resonance is CC 21.

If you don’t have the manual, you can record MIDI from the LP into a Live clip as you turn a given knob… then look at the Envelopes (“e” icon) in the MIDI clip and it will show you which CC number had data recorded when you turned the knob. For that matter, if you don’t have the manual you can download it here.

Good luck; let me know if you have any questions. Little Phatty + Ableton Live is basically my main rig these days.

Amos,
You just use the Phatty and Live? Can you tell us more about your workflow and how you integrate the two?

Thanks,
Lee

Hi Lee,

Usually I create one MIDI track for MIDI clips to play into the LP, and then multiple Audio tracks, one for each layer of Little Phatty audio that I will be using. I program different MIDI clips and play them into the phatty, then one at a time I set the audio tracks to monitor the input from the phatty and I record audio clips in realtime. When I have an audio clip that I like, I set it to play back the clip and let it loop, while I set another of my audio tracks to monitor the Phatty now and play one of the other MIDI clips. Then start live-tweaking, record a clip on the new audio track, then set that to play looped.. now you have two layers of live-tweaked Little Phatty loops… arm another audio track and set it to monitor the Phatty, fire a different MIDI clip, rinse and repeat.

Here’s a little example from this past weekend… me faffing about in the studio with my LP and Ableton Live.

phatty (almost house)

This track involves a lot of crazy control-voltage modulating the LP filter… not a lot of arrangement or production put into it; was just for fun.
A friend of mine calls this style “nitrous house” but I haven’t checked.
Cheers,

Amos
