Arpeggiator and Sub Phatty

Hello Moog users!

I am new into the synth world, i am planning to order a Sub Phatty, im absolutely in love with the sound it produces and all of its features, but the thing that concerns me is that it doesn’t have an arpeggiator built-in, it’s all good, but i would like to know if theres a way to add this feature to the synth with maybe a MIDI Keyboard or something?

Thank you so much!

You could get an Arturia KeyStep or some other external device (dedicated hardware or software on a computer/tablet/phone), but you should also consider getting a Sub 37 instead. The Sub 37 comes with an arpeggiator, a sequencer, a larger keyboard, duophonic capability, an extra mod bus, more dedicated buttons and knobs, etc.

Hello Breun, thank you so much for your answer, i guess you are right about the Sub 37, the problem is that i live in Colombia and dollars here are like the triple :frowning: so its very expensive compared to Sub Phatty, what are your thoughts about Little Phatty instead? Maybe the way to go will be with the KeyStep. Again thank you so much!

Hola hermanito!

Remember you can buy your Moog synth at Audiotecna, Colombia’s official dealer for our country. We have way better prices than what you can get if you import it yourself, have local warranty, official service center, and you can also try it beforehand at our showroom. We are able to teach you how to use it with the rest of your gear to get the arpeggiated sound you need

The Sub Phatty is currently out of stock but we will have it back in a couple of weeks

Is it safe to assume at this point that no update with arpeggiator will be coming for the Sub Phatty? Just wondering if I should finally pull the trigger on a Keystep or something similar.

There are some great options on the iPad. Step poly arp & Fugue Machine esp. But frankly, mono sequencer inside Ableton Live is very good compared to hardware stuff. I drive my SP with all these options & use cc control to sequence parameters inside the moog.

I love the arpeggiator and the endless sequencer on the OP-1, they are one of a kind and work great with Moog: https://www.instagram.com/p/BQy8doqhSz_/

I’m sure the OP-1 is cool, but also more expensive than the Sub Phatty itself. (Of course the OP-1 is also more than just an arpeggiator, it’s a pretty extensive instrument itself.)

I’m pretty happy with my Arturia KeyStep, which might be the cheapest dedicated MIDI controller with a keyboard and arpeggiator.

You might also be able to use a keyboard-less arpeggiator device like an ARPIE or a MIDIpal using the Sub Phatty’s own keyboard. I think you’d have to disable local control to have the keyboard only send MIDI to the arp device (and not control the Sub Phatty directly) and send the arpeggiated MIDI back to the Sub Phatty sound engine. I haven’t tried something like this myself, but see the LOCAL CONTROL section on page 34 of the Sub Phatty manual on how to disable/enable local control. Maybe a little fidgety and not as easy as just plugging in a KeyStep, but it might be worth considering.

And yes, there are of course software arpeggiators that run in a DAW or stand-alone on a computer, phone or tablet. If you don’t mind using a separate device for that and already have such a device, that’s probably the cheapest solution.
