Trying to control parameters with BCR2000 via MIDI:
I am somewhat new to MIDI, but I am finding the Behringer dual-manual for both the BCR2000/BCF3000 to be an incredibly vague read on how to actually assign the rotary encoders what CC messages they are to be receiving.
Anyone have experience controlling T3 parameters via MIDI or even, the BCR2000 in specific?
Thanks in advance; I’m a long-time lurker but a first-time poster.
I could really use the assistance of someone. Do I need to send messages from SysEx on my Mac Pro? Do I need a MIDI interface as well? Both have USB MIDI and standalone MIDI.
I don’t have any experience with the Behringer gear but have controlled my T3 with an Akai MPK25, a Novation MkIII SL25 and the MP201.
You merely need to select the correct midi channel, choose a desired midi CC from the Taurus manual (something obvious like Filter cutoff until you can confirm it is working) and then set the value range or in the case of a momentary button, the setting.
Best to run a din midi cable straight from your controller to the T3 as computers in the middle can throw a wrench in the works between USB routing issues, filtering, interface drivers, etc.
No, SYSEX is not required unless you are looking to update an old version of code.
If you don’t have a good controller, get your hands on a small 2 octave keyboard or better yet the Novation MkIII SL-Zero.
Yeah I use a Novation X-Station and with the help of the manual got it set up pretty quickly. The main thing is finding out how your Behringer assigns CCs to its knobs, as the Taurus’ CCs will have fixed values (e.g. Filter Cutoff is 19 if you’re using MSB). You need to figure out how to make one of the Behringer knobs send 19 (value range 0-127) as a CC and that would be the filter controlled.
Okay, I figured out how to assign parameter and value to the knobs, but I think I am missing something else as my tweaks have no effect on the sound. I am using LSB and having the BCR2000 controller mode for each parameter set to Absolute (14-bit).
I just connect the MIDI out of the BCR2000 to the MIDI in of the T3, correct? That’s all I have done and have the T3 running Lo Z out to an amp.
I have a feeling I am missing something gear-wise or connection-wise as this is my first MIDI endeavor ever.
The T3 should be able to receive LSB MIDI regardless of being set to on or off, correct? Because I’m sending LSB messages to the T3 – not receiving it.
Did with no luck; I think my cable (although I’ve never used it?) is bad as the LED indicating MIDI is being sent on the BCR2000 does not light up for the ‘MIDI out’ indicator. However, when I plug it in via USB to my Mac Pro, the LED indicator for the USB port on the BCR2000 lights up.
Wishing now I had been a bit more paranoid and bought two MIDI cables.
Hopefully this is truly the problem because I seriously don’t know what I’m doing wrong while at the same time, knowing very little about MIDI.
Does there seem to be anything wrong with what I’m doing (as mentioned in my last post)?
Just a totally wild suggestion but for some reason sometimes my T3 stops responding to incoming midi when it’s connected to my sequencer; turning the T3 off and on corrects the problem.
Hi - just fixed an issue that sounds identical to this (albeit attempting to control a different piece of kit). Turned out the BCR2000 was in the wrong mode and the MIDI out disabled. Changing the mode to S-2 set things as they should be. Hope that helps: try it out!
Yes, foolishly enough, I had MIDI out on the BCR2000 not enabled.
Not sure which standalone mode I’m in, but does S-2 allow you to send 14-bit (LSB) CCs to the Taurus III? I am only able to send MSB presently and it isn’t exactly smooth.
