I can work my Rme or Phatty no problem in Ableton 7..but lets say i have a midi track open with the Rme and i have my bassline…Now maybe i will want to open a new midi track within Ableton and record a Lead Part again with the Rme…but im not ready to bounce my Bassline to Audio yet…Is it possible to use the Rme like on another channel for my lead and still have the option of going back into my bassline channel and altering stuff…if you know what i mean…
Within Ableton i have my stuff set up through the External Instruments app…im scared to experiment too much incase i completely makes a balls up of it..
Hey, I’m not really an Ableton user, but can’t you set up two (or more) tracks controlled from the same MIDI channel and arm each one seperately?
…But remember the RME is monophonic, so you will never be able to have both playing simultaneously over MIDI. You will have to record one track to disk to play another.
If you then wanted to change your bassline, just keep the MIDI track and edit it. And then if you’re happy, record it again.
I use Ableton Live and my Moogs extensively; I will tell you one thing which is that I use the external instrument gubbin when I know I’m only using the Moog synth for one “voice” (say only bass and not lead, f’rinstance),
when I am doing like you suggest here and using the same Moog synth for a bass part and also a lead part, I’ll create separate audio tracks and name one “bass” and the other “lead” and I will set both to monitor the same input channel (the one with the Moog on it)… then I will create one MIDI track, and name the MIDI clips on that track as to whether they are bass or lead. I’ll mute one or the other of the audio tracks depending on which MIDI clip I am playing. When I want to hear them both at the same time, I’ll record one of the parts as an audio clip and set that track’s MONITOR to “auto” instead of “in.”
If I want to make changes to the part I already recorded as audio, it’s easy; just set the track to “IN” again instead of AUTO, tweak the original Midi clip and play the MIDI again.
