That’s nice, but you won’t see anything like that unless you crack your case open and get an X/Y scope.

I think you’d be hard pressed to beat a real oscilloscope’s responsiveness with a software scope, but there are some nice perks to software insofar as the low cost and recording capability ![]()
For anyone interested, here’s a (retro?) montage of some SUB 37 oscillator shapes following the analogous WAVE knob positions. The “pure” saw happens just before you start to hear the square wave mixed in, which is pretty visible here. The 50% duty cycle square wave is in the upper right. In the middle, the pink noise generator and filter self-oscillation (sine wave) are shown, along with pulse width modulated beyond the maximum knob setting close to the point of choking off. I’ve decided to go for this two channels 20 MHZ vintage oscilloscope from the 70’s. It got XY and can do lissajous paterns. I’ll post pictures soon if everything works fine.

This is similar, if not exactly the model, I used to have ~40 year’s ago
only disadvantage of old 70s or 80s oscilloscopes is that they have the old CRT tubes in them, firing some nice radiation your way. Which is why the units are so deep in size.
i was elated to see CRTs phased out and replaced by LCD. i could not wait to get them the hell outa my studio. I used to have 3 big Sony CRT monitors in the 90s in my studio. I used to call them “cancer boxes”. i remember my face used to get warm from sitting in front of them, only God knows how it was slowly cooking my brain, and burning out my eyes, but i had to get work done, you know how it is. There was no other option. One was for our old Mackie D8b screen and the other two for Cubase. And then there was the TV running constantly as well. so thats 4 CRTs actually hehe we never had to turn the heater on in the studio thats for sure. I remember just hearing about the coming of LCD technology and shouting “finally…about time Halleluiah!” and being the first in the queue to get some.
i sure wouldnt let another CRT through the door in this day and age. the LCD Oscilloscope option looks far better if i was you.
It would be more prudent to concern oneself with improper disposal of a CRT monitor than any type of radiation emissions from one.
A CRT monitor did negatively affect the stability of my Theremin though.

Hi novice scope user here so have a few basic questions:
I have an old, calibrated Tektronix 465M (a 100 MHz dual-channel portable scope) and after reading this thread I am a bit confused so can I simply connect a BNC to a 1/4 phone plug and connect it directly from the Sub 37 headphone jack to the X bnc connector of the scope and setting it to DC and 1v? i.e. not using a probe? would there be an impedance issue?
Secondly, since it has dual channels, how would I utilize them?
