Advanced: Moog Source - Switching the note priority

this is probably a question for the more advanced/electronically gifted…

can you think of a way to switch the note priority on a Moog Source?

I had it done by an engineer, but I’m starting to wonder if there is/was a better way to do it. It definitely has had some side effects (when its switched to hi-note priority):

  • certain lower notes will occasionally share a key.
  • takes longer to warm-up.

The mod (as i mentioned) included a bypass switch, which when switched back to stock (low note priority), allieviates any issues. It warms up much quicker and plays fine. I really need a synth that is high-note priority. I honestly can’t get used to the low-note priority. I really love the Source and would hate to sell it, I just wish the mod wasn’t causing so many issues.

the note priority has never been an issue for me with the source, ever. for left hand bass and lead its great. im not sure why its such a problem for you?

each synth has its own character and the low note priotity is one of the things that makes you play the source in a particular way. if you have to have it changed then youve probably got the best compromise unless someone can chime in with a better mod.

One could always take one’s finger off the lower key…

I haven’t read this forum for very long, probably a year or less. But I haven’t gotten the impression that it’s a real good place for technical questions or mod-friendly material (although I still ask..). I’ve noticed your name here for as long as I’ve been reading posts, so I probably don’t have to tell you this. Maybe i’ve just missed the tech threads…
Have you joined the analogue heaven mail list? Some of the more technical people on this forum have been on that list for a long time, and I find alot of answers and general technical info in it’s archive. I haven’t joined myself, but I’ve been able to access the archives from a Search Engine by a guy named Mark Pulver (google search these keywords).

Maybe you could find some help there.
The only thing I could recommend is buying a duophonic synth like the Arp Odyssey or Moog Sonic Six. Although, I think that they use a “scanning” keyboard to give the second note high note priority. Unless I’m wrong, the first still has low note… never mind.

ohhh, so that’s what i’m doing wrong!

I guess it’s a little tough for me because I started out on an Mg-1 (high-note priority) and to go to a low-note priority synth after that, is sort of like trying to write with my left hand (when I’m a lifelong right-hander). Sure, I’m a sloppy player and let my fingers rest on keys they have no intention of playing… But with high-note priority, nobody knows it!

Thanks for the info on that other board/archive man… I’ll see what I can find. I don’t know anything about modding a moog, I just wish someone could say “oh well you’d probably need to do this: ________”, then I would ask my tech if that’s what he did, and if not, ask him to try that instead.

I should really just get a LP = Problem solved. I don’t want to sell the Source though! Or do I? No, no I don’t.

you know you want the LP

maybe you should get one (with magic dollars  ) and then if you find it does everything you need the source for, then sell it (the source that is), otherwise you could keep both?

Oh, I KNOW the LP can do everything (& more) that I need of a live board  I just can’t afford one right this second. I could if I sold the Source… but I’m pretty attached to it and I know I’d regret it.

Just gotta save my pennies.

I think once we all play the Little Phatty in person, it will be no contest between a Source and LP. Just from the samples I’ve heard (check out the recording someone posted in the LP forum), it’s nothing less than brilliant, and right up there with the very best Moogs. Plus, at or around $1000 for the ‘Performance’ edition LP, it will be well within many peoples reach. Only, by then, it may be hard to get much re-sale value out of the Source. I’m pretty sure no ones gonna buy a Source for $800-$1000 anymore when they can get a LP for nearly the same price.

Although, they’ll probably never be a synth as cool looking as the Source- and that’ll always be worth alot. I could never get over the meager interface on the Source, but I’ll be darned if it ain’t one of the prettiest little monos ever designed.
