I have a sub 37 and two minitaurs. Running ableton 8.
All three moogs are hooked up via USB midi. Only one of my minitaurs gets recognized. Which one recieves/sends midi data is kind of random. Everytime I boot live, or power cycle the moogs, it randomly selects one of the two. If I hook up one of the minitaurs MIDI chained directly to the sub37, it does the same thing. I’m thinking ableton just can’t recognize duplicate devices?
I thought the problem might be just ableton, but it isn’t. The OS X audio/midi setup utility only sees one, as well.
Has anyone noticed something similar with having multiple slim phattys or anything like that?
I just installed and ran the 3rd party OS X utility “Midi Monitor”. It confirmed that the computer is receiving midi data from both units, but it’s still only listing one minitaur unit. The ableton midi indicator (little yellow/green square that flashes when midi data is received by ableton, top right corner of the screen) flashes when I turn knobs on both minitaur units. So they are both “working”. Is it possible that because they are both named the same thing that the computer just assumes they are the same unit?
Quick update:
After talking with Nathan and Amos at tech support, they informed me that this is a problem that they are aware of. As I assumed, the Minitaur isn’t sending its serial number over midi, so the computer isn’t seeing both devices. Apparently this is something that will get fixed in the next update “in a month or so”. I know those guys are busy, so hopefully it happens sooner rather than later, but I don’t know how large the percentage of “multiple Minitaur users” make up the moog community, so it might not be a high priority.
I also encountered this when I picked up a second Minitaur thinking I was getting another analog kick drum voice to use in Ableton. If I remember correctly, I was able to get the computer to see it, but it was a no-go getting the editor to know which minitaur it was talking to (I sold the second minitaur).
Correct. Amos confirmed that since the minitaurs don’t send serial numbers via midi, the editor won’t differentiate between them. You can assign them to different midi channels and send them notes, you just really can’t control both in the same environment. Apparently this will be fixed in the next version of the editor.
