Could all of you vets refer me to a link, or an explanation of how to use the CV plug-ins on the Voyager? I’ve often wanted to run another synth through the voyager, but I’m not sure how.
I’ve youtubed various times, but only came up with the basic demos of the instrument knobs, and such. If anyone has a diagram as the correct way to patch-in external devices…I sure don’t want to damage my Voyager.
This may have been covered in years past, but I never paid much attention. After years of owning the Voyager, I really want to delve deeper in to the powers it posseses. Thx for the help in advance.
I have the manual. I’m looking for the right procedure for running an additional synth, drum machine etc. through the Voyager. Like which port do I patch into?
Well, if you want to run audio through the Voyager, you won’t be using any of the CV ins, but rather the external audio input (which is located on the top panel next to the main outputs and the insert loop).
Step 1) Turn off all the oscillators in the mixer section and turn on the external input.
Step 2) Flip the Env/Gate switch to “On/External”
Step 3) Plug in your instrument into the input and adjust its volume in the mixer.
Playing another synth ‘through’ the Voyager from an Audio in point of view is not very exciting, especially if you are turning off all OSCs (in which case it’s just a mixer). But the Filter will be active and you can use it to affect the sound of your other synth.
The challenge is that since the ENV.GATE switch is “ON/EXTERNAL”, the envelope of the Voyager has already fired the first time and is now closed, so it is up to you to find an intelligent way to ‘re-fire’ it, or to mess with either an expression pedal plugged into the Filter control input jack, or alternatively, screw with the cutoff knob while playing your other instrument (not the easiest thing to do unless you have several hands).
IF your other instrument is analog, you will likely have a GATE output jack and can use it to trigger the Voyager envelope which will follow the ASDR in the Filter and Volume sections when plugged into the ENV GATE jack. Alternatively, you can use either a Moogerfooger 107 FreqBox or a 101 LowPass filter’s Envelope follower to ‘listen’ to a split signal of your other instrument (ie. one lead of the split signal goes into the Voyager audio input; the other into the Fooger input). The ‘follower’ circuit will therefore produce an evelope based on the attack of the sound played.
Another way to do this is with a synth.com ‘instrument interface’ which is quite affordable and has a knob to set the threshold through which the envelope will be triggered http://www.synthesizers.com/q118.html ; a mere $92 if you have a power supply.
The possibilities are endless.
Hope this little bit of added info helps you some. If you need more background behind anything that I mentioned here, ask… there are others here with way more experience with the stuff that I picked up.
