What has been some of the ways people have been incorporating their 104 with their Voyager? I only have one 104Z. I have tried it through the V’ger’s FX loop, but the keyboard’s gate cuts it off too quickly. Right now I have the left main going through the 104 and the right main into my mixer which has been ok. My mixer has all its send/returns used up. Any other suggestions (other than buying another 104)?
Use the Voyager’s mono out only.
Yeah, but I’ll miss the stereo.
In my own experience, the Voyager’s Mix/Out loop is a great place for chorus, phasing and flanging effects, EQ, tube preamps - even some distortion pedals - but not for delays (or reverbs, in general).
I can think of a few options using the MF-104 with a Voyager/VX-351 combo:
You could use the key pitch CV to control the delay time, so that delay time changes as you play up and down the keyboard, or you could do some interesting things by have an envelope CV control the delay time or feedback. Applying an LFO here could also produce some pretty wild results.
An expression pedal can also be employed to affect delay time, feedback or mix level. Gives your feet something to do while your hands are busy turning the Voyager’s knobs!
Lastly, you could place another effect into the MF’s loop for some interesting results. Try the MF-103 Phaser, or maybe some EQ (try eliminating the lows and boost the highs). And if you’ve got another delay pedal (or can borrow one - and it doesn’t have to be another MF-104), looping delays can be a great source of whacked-out effects.
My suggestion is to gather up what ever you’ve got (effects pedals & rack gear), grab a handful of patch cords and spend a happy afternoon experimenting! Your efforts WILL be rewarded.

Has anyone tried running the mod/wheel out of the vx into the 104z mix amount? So you only get delay when you use the mod wheel?
Josh
Yes, the VX mod wheel out will allow you to control whatever delay paramater you have it connected to with the mod wheel. This particular patch is fun when the wheel is already controlling another setting…like lfo rate, etc.
Tyler
Actually if you’re using a short delay for timbre modification (not echo/slap)you could use the mix/out loop.
I have two original 104s I bought before the Voyager was released - before I knew of the stereo outputs. Stereo 104s on the Voyager with dual oscillating filters being modded by S&H is wicked ![]()
Hello,
You may want to get a hold of a set of manuals Roland wrote for the System 100M some years ago. Originally a four volume set titled, “Practical Synthesis for Electronic Music”, volume 1 explains the use of post filter/pre-vca vc audio delay in the construction of solo string voices.
The first two volumes sometimes turn up at used book dealers, and on occasion, ebay. The material is copyrighted, so I am not at liberty to post any repros.

Lawrence
