hi, im new to moogerfooger pedal, i just bought mf 104m recently and its really awesome but i need some guidance
is it worth to get cp 251 for 104m because some people in the other forum told me cp 251 only useful if you have 104z since 104m comes with new features so adding a cp 251 isnt necessary
and what moogerfooger to add next after 104m to experiment and create some crazy synth sounds with my guitar
anyone here have some samples of 104m and 108m when works together?
The CP-251 will add some new abilities to the 104M, and it won’t be a waste of money especially if you plan to get other foogers. Since the LFO is built into the 104M, and you are able to access varying waveforms & apply an amount to the delay time, the CP-251 doesn’t need to be used for this. You can however modulate both the time and amount, as well as the mix, feedback & lfo rate. The achieved results will be useful, but not quite as extreme sounding as what the LIFO does to the time.
As for other foogers. They all get my vote. For crazy synth sounds with guitar, FreqBox is the craziest. The filter is always useable, and the MuRF is like no other, and capable of acting a bit like a chameleon. The ring mod is lush, and dissonant, the clusterflux is amazing in many ways beyond just chorus & flange extremes… And the phaser is flat out powerful.
I’m no expert on the CP-251, and my MF104M is on layaway, so what I do know, is the CP-251 is going to give you different modulations that won’t be from just the 104M itself. For instance, the sample/hold, that could be routed to the lag processor or attenuator, or the rate it all descends/ascends. You don’t mention if you’re using your MF104M for guitar, synth, or drum machine, but either way, the CP-251 is just another tool to control the CV of the Moogerfoogers or Moog Synths. I wrack my brain around what I should do right after I do get my 104M home, go straight for a CP-251, or just start saving up for the 108M, but sooner or later, I would imagine myself getting a CP-251 regardless, just to try out all the different ways to twist the sounds. You may think you don’t need it, because the M is better than the Z, but I really wouldn’t look at it that way IMHO. But maybe for what you needed it for, the 104M is all you needed in a analogue delay. Fair enough, but don’t assume that the CP-251 isn’t necessary in the long run. Some people have mentioned you need at least 2 foogers to really see any difference, but I’m sure you can find new sounds with just 1 fooger and a CP-251, just so long as you have enough patch cables, and you have some understanding of what it is you’re doing. Maybe half the fun of it is: just trying things, experimenting, and seeing what you come up with.
Each has his own opinion, but to me, next in line to accompany the 104 is the 101 low pass. Not the wildest an craziest, but the most useful. You can use it with any instrument, keys, strings or wind. It’s also the less expensive of the foogers. You can almost have a 101 and a CP-251 for the price of a 108.
The 101-104 is my favorite pair for guitar playing. Get a couple of expression pedals while you’re at it. The M-audio is cheap and works very well. With this set-up, your guitar will sound very synth like. People won’t believe all the new sounds and terrific tone.
I have all the foogers but the 108 (soon) and I am very much impressed by it, but I can’t comment much on it, so besides it, next in line would be the 105. Very capable fooger. The 107 pitch follower does not track pitch all that well with most guitars, I would stay away from it (or sell you mine real cheap) Just kidding on the selling part, I use the 107 with keys as an extra oscillator.
I am not a big fan of the ring modulator and I prefer playability and musicality over crazy sound effects, so a phaser is also a good choice.
Talking about the CP-251, its LFO and mixer and attenuators will help you control so many things and help you tame expression pedals. Highly recommended. Many foogers have a built-in LFO but (apart from the phaser), you can not redirect them to anything else but it’s dedicated function. That’s fine, but an external LFO that you can use any way you like is really useful and you really need to tame the pedals for better control. Inverting a pedal is also priceless. So much so I use two CP-251 along with a bunch of expression pedals.
