I have stage on order and I presume that I will get it before this OS update is applied. Does this mean that the stage is not currently shipping with the sample and hold, noise, and autotuning features, or is this os update different?
The Stage is already shipping with sample & hold, noise, auto-tuning and all that good stuff. We wrote those features in time to ship with the Stage from the beginning. At that time, the Tribute OS was still at 1.02c or 1.02d. So, we had to write a version for the Tribute that had those new features. Additionally, we were able to include some minor bug-fixes and tweaks to the OS just to improve what it was already doing… so in the process of writing an update for the Tribute edition, it meant that we ended up with better code for the Stage as well. So this means that there is now an update for the Stage as well as the Tribute, but they will be the same OS, just compiled for the Stage or compiled for the Tribute. The two synths have different Device ID codes in Sysex, so that it “knows” it is a Stage or a Tribute.
I was already as happy as a “pig in sh*t” with my TE when i bought it…to now get a major OS update that expands it’s capabilities for free totally rox my sox. These guys outta be nominated for a “Company Of The Year”
award Thanx again MOOG…incredible work!
The Stage’s hardware has been upgraded with the addition of a second mod destination so presumably the OS will have some features that the TE cannot take advantage of (or respond to).
It’s looking like Monday will be the day! (at last, right?)
I just remembered another reason why there are different OS builds for the Tribute and the Stage editions - when you do a “Factory Restore” on the Tribute Edition, you get the original Tribute patches reloaded from memory; on the Stage Edition, a factory restore will give you the Stage presets. This is coded into the firmware, so it necessitates a version for each.
Just to clarify, this doesn’t mean that if you have a Tribute but want the Stage presets, you should load the Stage version of the OS update… this will not work, because the hardware ID tag in the software will not match your hardware.
You can certainly use the Stage presets on the Tribute, but the way to do it would be to send a sysEx patch bank file containing the Stage presets to your Tribute.
The sounds used in the sample player on that page are all taken from the Tribute edition factory presets. Usually the patch name is mentioned in the name of each sample.
As for loading the Stage patches onto the Tribute, I have tried it and they sound fine. A great number of them don’t even use the 2nd mod destination; it’s not that crucial for your basic bread-and-butter type sounds. There are some patches which will sound a little different without it but still very good, and only a few (Mod Dropkick comes to mind) where it makes a serious difference. On the whole, it’s just another set of patches using the same analog sound engine, so no worries…
I’ve asked before: will the Stage presets be made available for us to upload to our Tributes? I’m very new at monophonic Moog & could stand to learn from all all the sounds I can get my hands on. My thread asking people to list their favorite patches failed as miserably as the same type of thread for the Voyagers. Anyway, your consideration in this matter would be much appreciated.
