It depends on how shitty you want to sound. The first recorded example of distortion ("Rumble" by Link Wray) was achieved that way, but I don't see much point in doing it anymore. Especially if you want fuzz. Holes in your speaker will just sound lo-fi, not fuzzy.

Moog Moments
What was that one moment when you knew you absolutely had to play synthesizer? Also, if you remember, what was the board that brought it all together? Mine was at an Alabama Jihad show. I had been listening punk rock for a while, but they brought this new element that made it so much better. That el...

Moog Movie
I just saw the new Moog Movie, and wow. Dr. Moog is so badass. The all-original soundtrack is great, and that chick that plays the theremin to sound like an upright bass blew my mind. That movie is great. All the bonus footage, etc. is great too. I especially like that the beginning credits were ill...

I personally am a huge advocate of the Roland HS-60 as first synth. It IS a Roland Juno-106 with the inclusion of built-in speakers. They sell for way less than 106s because no-one knows about them. Everyone says they are too heavy for gigging, but they are full of crap. Go ahead and get a Casio VL-...

Barenaked ladies are good. I can respect that he uses one because, if I'm not mistaken (mind you I've seen them in concert, but it's been a while), he has a relatively sparse setup, working to achieve the sounds he wants with out a huge keyboard arsenal. The guy in Maroon 5 takes loads of huge beefy...

I may be biased because I think they suck but using something as small/incredible-on-it's-own as a master midi controller is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Also, what kind of big shot uses a MicroKorg? They are cool, and I do like them alot, and they are great for people on budget (myself), but ...
