Re: Rick Wakeman live from '75

I didn't mind some of the stuff on "Journey to the Centre of the Earth", but was disappointed with "Tales from Topographic Oceans." It was a two record set and had just one small solo part I liked. Specifically, the Mini solo here: http://www.minimoog.net/topographic_solo.mp3 Th...

Re: OptoKey Minimoog D contacts now in production

I always thought the Ensoniq contacts were capacitive, not inductive. Either way, they too had their problems sometimes. Kurzweil MIDIboard had a capacitance contact system. Ensoniq was inductive. Both lent themselves to a cost efficient poylphonic aftertouch system. Are you sure? I thought it used...

Thermin live with orchestra yesterday!

Didn't anyone else catch the Detroit Symphony Orchestra concert on Saturday - either in person or from their live video-cast online? They performed David del Tredici's "Final Alice", a wild and amazing piece based on "Alice in Wonderland" that features a full orchestra plus banjo...

Re: Moog 960 Pictures

You could save a bunch of time and just get a synthesizers.com Q960. Clone of the 960. At $800+ for a Q960, he's going to save a lot of money by doing it himself. But it is going to take a lot of efforts and time, I'll grant you that! Yes, if you go with cheap pots, knobs, swtiches, and jacks. I co...

re: SEM VCO Freq knobs, they were not problematic or poor design from a failure perspective, it's just that Tom (apparently) didn't like them which is why he opted to go with two controls per VCO. At least that's what he said at the Red Bull lecture he did in Boston in 2009. I think his gripe was t...

Re: Macbeth MicroMac

I think the best of both worlds was the concentric, geared knobs on the Oberheim SEM for VCO pitch. The outer knob let you sweep the whole audio spectrum while the inner gave fine control. I was pretty disappointed that that was about the only real change on the new SEMs. I guess Tom couldn't find ...

Re: Macbeth MicroMac

Now can somebody explain the combination lock control and a not I saw somewhere about a pot that takes multiple full revolutions to reach the full range? Those are 10-turn pots, meaning that they spin around completely 10 times before hitting the bottom or top range. The idea is that this makes fin...

Re: Synth repair in Los Angeles?????!!!

Kevin just did a full refurb on my IIP. He is THE MAN! Highly recommended. Yes indeed, Kevin is a great meticulous tech. But you might be one of his last lucky customer to benefit from his huge knowledge and experience, after reading his worrisome, and very true, reflections on the state of the syn...

Theremin on "The Simpsons" 2011-05-08

No one has mentioned the Theremin scene on last nights "The Simpsons"??? It's about halfway through the episode when played by Milhouse to accompany his love song to Lisa. You can't buy that kind of publicity :)

Re: Are Moog and Gibson sharing engineering resources?

Robot Guitar - Les would have loved this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atKD-lNB27U& I have to wonder if there is some Iso Directional Induction Oscillator Technology applied to drive those tuner motors. It's been out for a couple of years now - maybe more. It's amazing technology for specific...

Re: where is the poly stacked SP video/demo?

The problem w/ a multitimbral MIDI polyphonic setup is because the voice allocation is through MIDI (which is a serial interface), if you play the same chord twice, the order of the notes sent to the units in the setup might be different. If the sounds/patches were different, then one note of the c...

Re: Minimoog Electrolytic Cap replacement tolerance?

If these are power-supply caps, which it looks like, and which almost all electrolytics will be, the exact value doesn't matter. These caps are must better quality and smaller than they were back when the Mini was built. You could probably put in a cap twice the value in the same space, which would ...
