OK sorted out and a little embarrassed. I never knew this but you can make your purchases invisible in the app store. If you swipe the app when you are trying to swipe to move to the next page it asks if you want to hide it. I must have done this a while ago without realizing it.

So I don't get this. Just updated like everyone else and am getting crashes. Deleted the app like was suggeste and went to "purchased items" in the App store and it's not there! The app store let me update, so what gives. Looked at itunes and showed the app in my library, so I restored it that way ...
