I had the same problem as you for the longest time. I can't tell if its the Macbook or my Phatty that's causing it, but connecting to it via USB will cause a hum to come out of the Phatty's output. I'm not sure if it's the same on SP's; but on my LP, the mod wheel has to be up before any modulation can be heard. I think this also applies if you are controlling it directly from your computer (no keyboard controller).
