i managed to find a solution to my question. the trick is to send a midi program change message. in ableton with each midi clip you can select the program no. to play the clip with. the program number is the preset that will be selected automatically on the slim phatty.

select preset by MIDI?
i'm a bit confused... i'm managing to do lots of fun things via midi like automating the filter cutoffs etc but i can't seem to find a way to select the currently active preset. did i miss something?
in my live set it would help me a lot not to have to worry about changing to the right preset at ...

i tried the demo and it seems to work for the slim phatty. my problem is that i can't automate the parameters of the vst in ableton so it's not really much use.
