It turns out that I have a defective Matriarch. Sweetwater is shipping a replacement unit.

Hmmm.... that's very strange. I assume you power cycled the unit and it comes up that way? Is there any midi connections? If so I suggest you disconnect them, power cycle and reevaluate. It could be a fault related to the play button.
I'm not connected through MIDI at this point. Just a mono ...
