This isn’t meant to replace the official Editor manual, nor the Sub 37 manual. It’s just an attempt to give us new users some quick answers to our how do I… questions.

Some general notes:

  • This is for the Moog Sub 37 Editor version 1.0.0.

  • Don’t pretend any of this is authoritative.

  • Make sure you have a good backup before doing anything.

  • Make sure you have the correct firmware to go with your Editor.

  • Some of this information was discovered by other forum members and rudely incorporated here.

  • Read the official manual for all the how to use details.

1. First Run

  1. Apply the firmware update to your Sub 37.

  2. Wait for the installer to finish all the updates.

  3. Make sure to power-cycle the Sub 37 after the firmware update is complete.

  4. Start the Editor.

When you start the editor, if the Sub 37 is not connected, the Editor will say so, and ask you to connect it:

Editor asks for a connection to the Sub 37.

So, connect the Sub 37 to your computer with a USB cable, then click the Setup button in the upper left panel:

Select the Setup page.

In the lowest panel, a little right of center, select the Sub 37 device for both MIDI input and output:

Before MIDI input and output selection.

This is what it should look like after the Sub 37 has been recognized by your computer, and the MIDI I/O selections have been made:

After MIDI input and output selection.

The Editor will notice the new connection, and see that it has not yet gotten the presets from the hardware:

Editor notices that it has not gotten presets from the hardware.

Click OK and let it download those presets:

Editor gets hardware presets.

It will take a few minutes; be patient.

2. First Look

The Sub 37 Editor/Librarian

2.1. Navigation Bar

The Navigation Bar

The top segment of the window contains the navigation bar.

2.1.1. Page Selector

The Editor/Librarian is organized into five Pages, which are selected in the control bar:

Editor

a simulation of the Sub 37 panel with controls for all the Preset menu items

Sequencer

settings for the sequence in the preset

Setup

settings the Global and MIDI menus

Mapping

settings for MIDI controls mapping

Librarian

a preset manager for the computer and Sub 37

The Sequencer, Setup, and Mapping pages actually just swap-in new content in the lower panel.

The lower edit panel can be folded up and down by clicking on the short bar in the middle of the bottom border.

2.1.2. Preset Browser

The right side of the Control Bar contains the Preset Browser. The browser lets us select and filter the presets, either from the Librarian’s Hardware Presets list, or in a folder in the Preset Library.

What good is it? It lets us jump among presets quickly.

How to use:

  • click on the Preset Name list, and select a different preset

  • use the keyboard up and down arrow cursor keys to move between presets

  • click on the Category name, and select a new category from the drop-down list

  • click on the tiny up and down arrows to select a new category

After you select a category, the Preset Name menu contains patches contained in the currently selected folder (or hardware) with that category only.

It does NOT affect anything on the Librarian page. It is NOT used to change the category of a preset.

2.2. Editor Page

The Editor Page

The Editor Page shows the main edit panel, plus a lower panel of additional controls. These additional controls correspond to menu settings on the Sub 37. There’s nothing here that you haven’t seen before, either on the Sub 37 panel, or in its menus.

2.3. Sequencer Page

The Sequencer Panel

The Sequencer Page displays the sequencer editor in the lower panel. It provides a nice interface to the sequence data - the notes, step parameters, and overall sequence settings.

2.4. Setup Page

The Setup Panel

The Setup Page displays the setup controls in the lower panel. It contains controls for the items in the MIDI and Global menus on the Sub 37. Read the Sub 37 manual section for those menus for the details of these settings.

Here is where you turn Local Control on or off if you use the Editor within a DAW.

Also, make sure that Program Change receive is on, so that the Sub 37 can follow preset changes from the Editor.

2.5. Mapping Page

The Mapping Panel

The Mapping Page displays the MIDI CC mapping in the lower panel. These correspond to the table entries in the MIDI Control Change messages starting on page 53 in the Sub 37 User Manual.

The controls for CV mapping are on the left side; these correspond to the entries in the Global > CV Mapping menu.

2.6. Librarian Page

The Librarian Page

The Librarian Page shows folders and lists of presets. It has three major columns, but is logically grouped into two sections:

  • presets on your computer

  • presets in the Sub 37

The columns show different items:

  • the left column shows folders on your computer.

  • the middle column shows the content of the selected folder as a list of presets and their category.

  • the right column shows the presets inside your Sub 37.

The computer keyboard can be used to navigate the lists. Use the up and down cursor arrow keys to move up and down the lists. Use the return key to open and close folders.

The librarian interface has a pop-up menu for each data column:

Folder menu

LibMenuFolder.png

Preset menu

LibMenuPreset.png

Category menu

LibMenuCategory.png

Hardware Preset menu

LibMenuHW.png

2.6.1. Preset Library

Open and close the folders with the return key or double-clicking them.

Double-click on a preset name to edit the preset; this also sends it to the Sub 37 edit buffer.

The Search Presets entry shows presets whose name contains the characters you entered. Make sure to clear it when you are done.

2.6.2. Hardware Presets

The Hardware Presets column is a virtual view inside the Sub 37. Just like the Sub 37 is organized into banks and presets, so is this column. It is how we pluck presets out of the Sub 37, and how we put presets into specific slots in the Sub 37. We do not sort it; we do not change categories here. It exists only to represent the insides of the Sub 37.

What we can do with the Hardware Presets column is move the presets around. Select one or more presets, drag and drop them, and they exchange positions with the presets they landed on. Try it with neighboring presets first. Note that it doesn’t do anything if the source and destination ranges overlap.

3. Common Questions

3.1. How do I find out what version I’m running?

On the bottom panel of the Setup Page, just right of center, at the bottom, you’ll see the software version of the Editor and the firmware version of the Sub 37.

3.2. I want to make a copy of my hardware presets.

When first starting up, it can be wise to make your own copy of the presets, especially if you have customized any. Here are the steps:

  • Go to the Librarian page by clicking on the Librarian button

  • Click in the empty area below the User folder

  • Make a new folder by clicking on the New Folder button; give it a good name

  • Select the folder by clicking on it

  • Copy your hardware presets to the folder:

    • click once on a preset in the Hardware Presets column at the right

    • select all the presets in that column by typing control-A (Cmd-A)

    • drag them to the middle column, your new folder (there’s a brief pause)

3.3. I want to sort the hardware presets by name or category.

Well, we really can’t. The Hardware Presets list is just a view inside the synthesizer, which is organized by bank and preset number. Can’t change that. Instead, here’s a workaround:

  • make sure you’ve synch’ed the editor with your Sub 37

  • go to the Librarian page

  • make a new folder, by clicking the New Folder button.

  • name it Backup or Mine or S37 — something that suggests to you an image of all the presets in my synth.

  • select the new folder

  • click once on a preset in the Hardware Presets list (the far right column)

  • select all the hardware presets by typing Ctrl-A (Cmd-A)

  • drag them into the folder you just made

  • it will take a while …

  • now you can sort your internal presets by name or category

3.4. I want to change the category of a preset.

  • select it in the middle column

  • click on the tiny arrows in the Category field

  • or right click in the category column, and select Change Category

  • select the new category

3.5. No, I want to change the category of a preset on the Sub 37.

  • go the the Librarian page

  • select your Work folder in the leftmost column

  • drag the hardware preset into the middle column

  • change the category, as explained above

  • drag the hardware preset back to its slot in the rightmost column

  • maybe delete the temporary copy you just made in your Work folder

3.6. I want to edit a preset.

  • go to the Librarian page

  • select the folder in the left column

  • double-click on the preset in the middle column

  • click on the Editor or Sequencer page buttons to get to the editor panels

3.7. No, I want to edit a preset in the Sub 37.

  • double-click on the preset entry in the Hardware Presets column (far right)

  • now click on the Editor or Sequencer page buttons

3.8. I want to backup my Sub 37 presets.

  • go to the Librarian page

  • click the Export Bank button

  • the Sub 37 will send all its presets

  • it takes awhile …

  • when it’s done sending, a filename dialog pops up

  • save the backup

  • NOTE: this backs up only the presets, not the global or MIDI settings

3.9. I want to restore the Sub 37 presets from a backup.

  • go to the Librarian page

  • click the Import Bank button

  • select the backup you previously made

  • it takes awhile …

  • the presets are restored

  • NOTE: this restores only the saved presets, not the global or MIDI settings

3.10. I want to backup the Global and MIDI settings.

  • get Bome SendSx (Windows) or Sysex Librarian (Mac OS X)

  • configure it to listen to the Sub 37

  • on the Sub 37, select the MIDI > Sysex > Bulk Dump menu item

  • let it run; it takes awhile …

  • NOTE: this backs up all the presets, along with the global and MIDI settings

3.11. I want to restore everything!

  • run Bome SendSX or Sysex Librarian

  • configure it (slower send speeds?)

  • select the bulk dump you did earlier, and send it to the Sub 37

  • it takes awhile …

  • NOTE: this restores everything - all presets, global, and MIDI settings

3.12. I want to send only keyboard notes out the MIDI ports.

See the next item.

3.13. I want to send only the ARP or Sequencer notes out the MIDI ports.

Pretend there are three boxes inside the Sub 37: the keyboard, an arpeggiator/sequencer, and a sound module. Here’s a diagram:

KBD

There are two controls of interest here: Local Control and Seq MIDI Out. Both these controls are on the Setup page of the Editor, and in the Global > Local Control and Global > Seq Options menus on the Sub 37.

With Local Control On, the keyboard controls the ARP, and the ARP controls the synth module. MIDI input is merged with the messages from the keyboard, and this merged stream is sent to the arpeggiator. MIDI output can come from the keyboard directly (Seq MIDI Out = Keys), or from the output of the ARP (Seq MIDI Out = SEQ).

With Local Control Off, there are two different routings:

  1. When Seq MIDI Out is set to Keys, the keyboard is routed to the MIDI Out ports. MIDI In is routed to the ARP, which talks to the synth.

  2. When Seq MIDI Out is set to SEQ, the keyboard connects directly to the ARP, and the output of the ARP is sent to the MIDI Out ports. MIDI In is routed directly to the synth module.

In addition, you have controls to select what kinds of messages are sent out the MIDI ports, and which ports are active. See the Setup page, and the MIDI menu on the Sub 37.

3.14. The modulation amount controls are too sensitive!

Here’s how the modulation boxes are setup now:

Modulation Routing

To narrow the range of modulation depth, pick a mod controller that you don’t use, and give it more of the available range. This cuts the range of the other controls.

For example, setting Ctrl4 to 50% will cut in half the modulation depth from the mod-wheel.

3.15. I know there are presets in this folder, but the Librarian says it’s empty.

Make sure the Search Presets field is empty. Or maybe it’s a folder that contains only other folders? If so, try opening it with a double-click or return key.

3.16. I’m missing a bunch of entries in the Categories menu. They were all there before!

The Categories menu shows only the categories that are assigned to the presets in the currently selected folder.

3.17. The sequencer gives only even beats; I’m bored with that!

Here’s one cheat: use the Sequencer Mod Values to modulate the Ratchet Count. You can’t get different pitches on each subdivision, but you can get something other than straight, even, beats.

Set the Sequence Mod Destination to Ratchet Count, set the Mod Amount to 100%, and set individual mod values at each step in the sequence. Set the initial Ratchet Multiple to 1, and modulate upwards with mod values from 0 to 127. Or, set it somewhere else and modulate up or down.

The table below shows the mod values for a particular ratchet count, when modulating up from a ratchet count of 1. Negate the numbers to decrease the ratchet multiple. For instance, if the Ratchet Multiple is set to 4, and you wish to modulate it down to 3, then you need to drop down by one notch, so set the Seq Mod value to something from 0 to negative 15.

4. Known Problems

  • When saving a preset, carefully crafted preset names can get mangled to make them file-system friendly.

  • In the Preset Browser, the Preset Names and Categories are unsorted.

  • Presets selected from the Preset Browser are not always visible in the Librarian Preset List.

  • In the Librarian, the Preset Names aren’t always sorted correctly.

  • When the Librarian sorts by Category, the Preset Names are unsorted.

  • In the Librarian, a closed folder is indistinguishable from an empty folder.

  • The Librarian allows only one paste after a copy.

  • On the Setup page, the sliders don’t land where you click them.

  • The KB Track parameter is in percent for the LFOs, but not for the filter and envelopes.

  • The KB Track percentage needs to be entered as a high-resolution number, instead of the prompted percent value. To get 100% tracking, enter 8192. (See the previous table.)

  • When dragging a knob upwards in the lower panel, the value display can suddenly jump to some control above the knob being modified. This affects all drags up and down, if the drag crosses the boundary between the upper and lower panels.

  • Save and Load Sequence needs some love.

  • The intonation scales have no names.
