I used to think that the DSI stuff was the only threat to Phatty. The good hardware based Virtual Synths (Virus Snow, Waldorf etc) were certainly more $$
But now Novation has released the UltraNova and I question at what point, people who make music will not care about whether or not a particular kbd is pure Analog or not? They to make high impact sounds and serious sonic capabilities in addition to an arpeggiator.
Looks as if they've incorporated some of their touch control technology along with a VA engine (onboard effects, etc), a Vocoder into a tight package. I have a Novation SL MK2 kbd that has a Fatar keybed (as this one does) and it's very well made (hard plastics and absence of that 'made in China' feeling that I get from Akai controllers).
If you watch the video, you'll see that it's aimed at the DJ/dance/trance/rave crowd. To me, it seems to be the next iteration of the Korg Micro type devices except with a full size and high quality keyboard.
Is this a threat to the possible future Phatty that we've been waiting for?
