Preamp suggestions?

Post by solman52 » Wed Apr 29, 2009 5:32 pm

running my LP into a Motu828mkII, and using logic pro studio, problem is my LP bass sounds real quiet when i play or record. i checked the soundcard settings for the inputs and they are maxed. Do i need a preamp?

I've noticed the output on the LP is a little quiet myself. I think though that the reason for this is that it's capable of being REALLY LOUD depending on how your patches are set. The overdrive will blow it up, with res down and the cutoff towards 7oclock or so you can generate some amazingly loud low end.

A preamp might be helpful, but be mindful that the LP will drive into it like a cement truck. :)

At the very minimum, you'll need an active direct box to get a good level. The Whirlwind IMP2 is an industry standard and under $50...

For a few more dollars you could get a preamp/DI combo that will also allow you to record with mics...the M-Audio DMP3 or Studio Projects VTB-1 can produce professional results very inexpensively...

You might want to look at this : http://www.dbxpro.com/DirectBoxes/directboxes.php

I don't have one (chances are I will by the end of the month), but I have a 231 dbx equalizer. Very fine unit for the price.

Killer marketing video on the site, fun to watch!

I use presonus tubepre with the LP and it makes a HUGE difference. Sounds alot warmer and louder when recording or just playing. Cost $100 new.

i have been building a lunchbox up for a couple years and I use the A-designs Silver for all my low register keyboard sounds. Its not cheap, but it sounds great with keyboards, especially bassy sounds. Its my lowend sound. It sounds good on Kick drums too.

I've got a Studio Projects VTB-1 between my LP and 828mkii.

I swapped the standard tube with a JJ one and it sounds great.

Here's a site showing the mod...

I got a refurbished VTB for £75 and the tube was £15.
