Just feel the need to testify (and ask a couple questions).
Bought a slightly banged up but functioning LP Stage I a week ago. Wow! Love it. I've been using soft synths via a USB keyboard controller with my band and the Moog is a terrific addition.
The LP just "feels" right. It's solid and beefy and there's a real connection there between man and machine. Even though the soft synths make some great sounds, there's a disconnect there...a distance if you will. Love how intuitive and easy it is to create those big, fat, classic analog sounds.
So onto the questions...
Since the LP Stage I has no USB interface, is it possible to connect it to my Mac using one of those hybrid MIDI to USB cables?
The OS on the LP is something like 1.03 (I'm at work right now so I'm not 100% sure). Are there any MAJOR advantages to updating to a more recent OS...are there even any updates for the Stage I?
And finally, the previous owner applied funky foam tape at the top edge of the control panel. Who knows why. Anyway, any suggestions for removing the tape residue without harming the surface?
I think Bob Moog would've been very happy if he got to see what a great product the LP is. Well done Moog!

OS 2.0 is worth it for the arpeggiator function alone. You can update your Stage I for free. Here is a thread with more details:MarkyGee wrote:Are there any MAJOR advantages to updating to a more recent OS...are there even any updates for the Stage I?

The USB/MIDI cable should work fine, or at least as well as it would with any other MIDI synth. I've never tried them myself.
There actually is an upgrade that you can get if you send your LP to Moog, where you can change it to a stage II so youll have the arpeggiator as well as Midi over USB.
Edit: Im not sure if the arpeggiator is a hardware or software improvement.
It would be worth the money to upgrade it. If the side panels are beat up, they woudl replace those with new ones that are cut to allow for the new usb interface.

Yes, the Stage I can be updated to OS 2.00 ie Stage II operating system. I myself have an M-Audio UNO that I just love as a MIDI interface. If you want OS 2.00, e-mail Amos[at]moogmusicD0Tc0m, and he'll be glad to give it to you. Because he's awesome like that. The Stage II OS will give you all the functions of a new Stage II machine without actually PAYING for a new Stage II. All you'll be missing is the black rear panel and USB port that the Stage II has.
