Slim Phatty FUNK

Post by DiggyDre » Mon Mar 28, 2016 3:19 am

I am trying to get some Parliament and Zapp and Roger type of basses. Can it be done on the Slim Phatty?
I'm mainly looking for these type:

Parliament: Flashlight (bass)
Zapp: More Bounce (bass)

and also the resonate funk basses that were popular as can be in the 80's

Well, Bernie Worrell famously plays a Little Phatty, so... yep, can do Funk! 8)

Maybe useless info to you, but on my Sub Phatty it is fairly easy to get those sounds exactly, even with some more 'growl' to it if one wants.
I do not know much about the Slim Phatty, but i think it's lacking the sub oscillator which is quite an essential component of the specific sounds you are looking for.

Yes it can definitely be done.
I think the sub oscillator is not necessary actually. The Model D of those days didn't have any sub oscillators. And as far as the number goes, I think one or two are enough.

The Minimoog Model D has three oscillators. Like on the Sub Phatty, this third oscillator does matter in terms of 'fatter'. 8)

My synth skills aren't the greatest and time is against me. Any tips on how to make the "Flash Light" bass"

How would I program the "Flash Light" bass?

There is a preset in the factory bank, in the #90. I'm sorry I don't have thename in mind...

Otherwise, I would start like this:
Osc:
Osc 1: 16', SAW, full level.
Osc 2: 8', SAW, half level (to be adjusted)

Filter/Filter envelope:
You need a envelope with sustain quite high, attack a bit "mellow".
Filter env amount : positive.
Set the cut off quite low and add a bit of resonance so that the envelope makes it "wow"...

This is a starting point, hope this helps :)

This has been discussed here once: bass impact can be more efficient when oscillators do not cancel each other at sound attack. This is only one reason I would not use systematically 3 osc. Another reason is that one oscillator sounds more "solid", that's something you sometimes want for a bass sound rather than just being "phatty". But hey, tastes... ;)

Thanks man! I just gave it a shot. While it wasn't exact, it is definitely in the ballpark! Thanks!
