Sub 37 - not sounding well...

Post by DrJustice » Thu Oct 29, 2015 1:03 pm

Listening trough the presets, I fear there's something wrong with my Sub 37.

I recorded the sounds of presets 1 to 16. The sound file is here (low bitrate, but more than enough for this purpose). All sounds are played by holding down the C near preset button 7 for a few seconds, and the recording is one take with a constant volume.

If some of you could listen through the recording and help me determine whether this is a healthy Sub 37, I'd be grateful.

Below is a "cue sheet" with comments.

Edit: In addition to this:
- The oscillators go silent when going to the narrowest pulse width, using constant on as mod the source, modwheel setting at 100% and moving the modwheel to ca 80% of it's travel - is that right?
- When modulating the waveform in the direction of the narrowest pulse, using constant on as mod the source and turning the mod knob to the right, it becomes a triangle - is that how it's supposed to be?
- The "Init Patch" presets and one of my own saved presets are almost inaudible below F# near preset button 13 - surely wrong. This does not affect the presets that are populated with actual factory patches.
- Going through the rest of the presets, things make little sense, with lots of inaudible and strange sounding patches...

Code: Select all

Preset Start Comment
1 00:02 Rhytmic 5th Filtration - Normal?
2 00:07 DARK MINDS - Low volume at start?
3 00:14 BombBass Tick - ALmost inaudible, very faint ticks
4 00:26 Duotronic Moogtrons - Normal?
5 00:30 BRIGHT PWM MOTION - Normal?
6 00:35 ASHEEED MOOGER - Normal?
7 00:41 Octavia - Almost inaudible
8 00:50 BAD ATMOS FEAR - Very faint, moving modwheel at 00:57 causes sudden sounds?
9 01:07 Zaxxor's Revenge - Almost inaudible
10 01:13 POLEMICS - Sharp spikes of resonance
11 01:28 RUNNER RUNNING - Moving modwheel mid way, normal or not?
12 01:38 Werkers Unite - Moving modwheel mid way, squelched, strange?
13 01:54 STRINGTRON - Just strange...
14 02:03 Pulse Bass - Moving modwheel half way through, strange cut off
15 02:18 Gamecom 8Bit Chiptime Fun - Normal?
16 02:25 1974th - Almost inaudible

Hi.
I listen to all of them and all factory presets are sounding strange.
The only thing what I can advice..Go to your menu/global settings/Init settings/HOLD TO RESTORE DEFAULT MIDI AND GLOBAL SETTINGS.
Maybe everything gonna be ok then.
Wish you all the best

Just listening to the first one doesn't sound good. It's doing what it's supposed to do as far as modulation but the sound is very "buzzy" or "tinny" for lack of a better word. It's as if it was being played through very cheap damaged speakers.

Thanks for taking the time to listen through, LuLoop and Bald Eagle :)

And yes, I have no reference, so the patches I wondered if are normal may indeed be strange too.

I've updated the OP with more findings, see after "Edit". There is much strangeness and probably a defect Sub 37 as fair as I can make out.

Here's a youtube video someone posted that you can compare to - the presets start about 30 seconds in.

Yours is definitely not right. Does it sound the same with headphones in the headphone jack?

Is this a brand new unit or is it perhaps a used one you're buying (or have bought)?

Here's something that sounds really strange, but has fixed weird problems for several people. Try doing a "quick erase" of the sequencer data. With the sequencer stopped, press and hold the BANK button and turn the PATTERN knob to the REC position. That erases any data in the sequencer. I don't know why, but sometimes this fixes some weird behavior, even things that don't seem to be related to the sequencer.

It's a brand new unit straight from one of Norway's biggest Music shops (although I noticed that the heads on the screws on the side panels had some sharp burrs, as if someone had screwed/unscrewed them with a wrong size philips driver...). It's a late unit with the metal filter frequency potentiometer and firmware v 1.1 BTW.

I followed your tip and tried erasing the sequence on a few patches, but it made no difference. The more I test, the stranger behaviours I'm finding. The conclusion must be that it's defect, so it's going back for an exchange or repair.

Thanks for verifying its strange condition for me, folks!

If any Moog representatives are reading, feel free to chime in.

Right. I just switched in on to do a quick test before packing it and sending it away. And, lo an behold, it more or less worked for a couple of minutes, then it became as described in the OP. So probably something thermal that makes the synth engine fall apart. Anyway, I'll do as suggested by paramnesia and run it past Moog's people first.
