Sub 37 Audio Out and Gain Structure

Post by mrberger » Mon Aug 31, 2015 2:56 pm

I have questions about the behavior of the audio out of my Sub 37 as I am experiencing some sonic weirdness when I'm running the Sub into various pedals.

If I run the audio out to an El Capistan V1, the delays will stop after a certain point (random amount of key presses) and the indicator light on the El Cap turns off.
If I run the audio out to a Mr. Black Dark Echo a lot of 60hZ hum gets generated also whether or not the Volume is turned up or down and/or the Mute is engaged. My signal chain is Sub 37 -> one pedal -> amplifier.

When running the synth into various compressors or my MF-104 (as stand-alone units), everything performs as expected. I have not as yet swapped the above-mentioned pedals in my signal chain, but that's next on my to-do list!

So I guess my question is, is this an expected behavior of the Sub 37? Is the audio Out overloading the inputs of the El Cap and Dark Moon? Or is there some other issue going on? I could not find any mention of the output signal strength in the manual ( hope it's there and I just missed seeing it ).

cheers and thanks in advance!

This is just a guess, but maybe it's a ground differential between the Sub 37 and the Strymon? I say that because I've never experienced a pedal hanging up because of input level issues. Distortion, sure, but not quitting the effect. Ground differentials, however, have caused lots of problems like that for me.

Sometimes, making sure that the power supply for all the devices comes from the same source is all it takes to fix it.

Also, Strymon effects (like Moog's) have significantly ample input headroom.

Again, this sounds like a grounding issue. I never go to a gig without a few humbusters (isolation transformers) like:

Sometimes, when an audio humbuster doesn't help, I can solve the problem with a device that goes on the end of your AC cable or wall wart:

Hi Dan,
tks for the input. FWIW, all devices are being run from 2 different outlets on the same circuit at home. Also, these symptoms just cropped up in the last week or so. Everything was working fine until then. I am running a bunch of pedals from my board using two Cioks PS's (Big John and Schizo) and only the good lord knows which devices are plugged into which PS at any given moment :-)
The commonality with the 2 devices in question are that they are the 1st effect after the Sub 37 so I, like you, am leaning towards a grounding issue.

The issue turned out to be caused by two things:
1) the issue with the El Cap cutting out was cause by insufficient juice being sent to the device. Swapping it to another outlet with enough current did the trick.
2) the hum was caused by a) a bad wire and b) the replaced wire being properly shielded from others. It was picking up interference from the massive amount of kludge-ey wiring I had under my pedalboard.
