SP manually programing automation ableton

Hi, I'm pretty new to this forum but i've been searching the internet and cannot for the life of me find an answer to this problem. I'm running my slim phatty into ableton live 9, everything is connected and responding properly but I'm trying to figure out how to record automation by manually tweaking on the SP and having it save the changes in the midi clip. From what i've read it should be possible, but i can't get it to budge. I can go in with my mouse and draw/write automation (ie. the filter) and then when the track plays the filter responds on the slim phatty... but i can't go into overdub, let the track play, and manually tweak the settings on the SP and have it record the changes. If this is making sense to anybody, could you help me out? thanks.
