Your favourite bass settings - Describe!

I'm AFV (away from Voyager) and miss it profoundly. Need to scratch that Voyager itch. I play it every day but not nearly as much tweak new bass sounds. Bass is what I use it for nine times out of ten. And I'm not that experienced when it comes to making synth sounds from scratch, I mainly go from where I am and discover, though I would really like to climb a step or two when it comes to being aware of what setting to use for a specific sound. Any preferences or advice you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a favourite of mine that I discovered when I visited a distant friend who owns a Model D. He wanted to try the Voyagers filter modulation and I really liked the sound, so when I got home I made a patch with osc 3 modulated the filter cutoff and the amount of modulation was controlled by velocity. It's got a "farty" (for lack of a better word) that I really enjoy. If there's room in the mix I open up the filter quite a lot and it sounds massive!

Quickly parusing the manual:

The LFO produces triangle and square waves that oscillate from .2 to 50 Hz.

So, yes.

New favorite I came up with in the past week.

Osc1/2 around 8-16'' slight detuned for sweet chorus. Saw or square to taste.

Osc3 off but set to triangle at 32'

Pedal bus source osc3, destination filter. No shaping

Play lower on the keybed. Bring in the filter mod. It'll get brighter and hollower then suddenly it acts like a nice crossover and the sub bass modulating the filter will make the oscillators gel nicely. Give a nice kind of goldfrapp or phantogram sound. Buzzy but with a very clear sub bass tone.

Why would that be a "sacrifice"? The oscs have different possibilities for modulation, and can be modulated themselves in terms of waveshape and sync, plus you can still use the modulating osc as a sound source. On top of that: you still have the LFO available for low frequency modulation.

Oscillator 1: 32" saw mixed full volume
Oscillator 2: 16" saw, sync engaged mixed about half volume. Use a mod bus to route control the pitch of osc 2 from the mod wheel (sync sweeps)
Oscillator 3: set to modulate filter cutoff. Use 2" for vowel sounds coming from the filter, 16" or 32" for more farts/sizzle
Use a fuzz pedal in the mixer insert for more dirt. Or route the right output into the mixer/filter input to do the old "overdrive" trick.


Filter: Mild resonance. Use none if going for a huge sound. Use lots if the low end isn't important to you. Best of all worlds is to use a fair amount of resonance and then layer the patch with a sine or tri wave from another synth (so you get the low end bass as well as the filter sizzle). 4 pole for the classic filter sound, 1 pole for more harmonics/acid.
Cutoff controlled by aftertouch and X/Y/Z pad. Oscillator waves also controlled by X/Y/Z pad.

Play with lots of modulation and wiggling.

I haven't seen you post on the forum before. A belated welcome. Nice to make your acquaintance.

Well, on the Minimoog you have to sacrifice Osc 3 for it's modulation properties due to the lack of LFO. It may not be much of a sacrifice because just 2 oscs is pretty powerful. The Voyager doesn't need to do this obviously if one is looking for a 3 osc audio patch with LFO modulation. This is what I was referring to as a sacrifice, which might not have been the best word to describe this feature.

It seems that using osc3 as both a mod and audio source simultaneously imparts a negligible overall effect to the sound with the Voyager. Perhaps I should explore this a little more deeply.
