You Tube Video using headphone out thru filter and ext audio

Post by jimkost2002 » Wed Jan 08, 2014 10:47 am

Hi Voyagers,

Have you seen the You Tube video called "FAT MOOG" where the demonstrator uses the old minimoog trick of re routing the headphone out through the ext audio jack? (They also send the headphone out through the Filter CV jack).

It's always been my understanding that you can't safely do this with a Voyager without frying the outs.
There's been some discussion on this board to that end.
I haven't tried it but REALLY want to if it's safe to do so!

Thanks In Advance!
JK

If you're worried about frying the outs, call or write to Moog. They'll happily give you the correct answer.

Asked many times before - not worth the risk:

It is not that big of a deal. Headphone amps are pretty close to line level voltages. There is not really any risk, but with expensive equipment, any risk can be scary. You might as well just use one of the outputs instead. It's not even that great of a trick, especially with 3 oscillators. A better trick is to use a pink or red noise source to slightly modulate the oscillators and/or filter. That always fattens the sound and makes it more "analog" sounding.

Some headphones output can reach as high as four to five times the line levels, when the output volume is set to maximum. That's high enough to damage a mixer input when it is not attenuated. Luckily on the Voyager there are both a headphone and external input level knobs to limit the signal.

Just don't push things too hard, and it should work. That red audio signal saturation LED on that external input is a good indication that things are begining to get hot when it is constantly lit...

Could that be done with the Voyager? With a VX-351 then, I suppose

Probably not, you'd need an external noise source. I was referencing the noise modulators on the model D. Actually the red noise is the best. I just use a tiny bit on the oscillators, adds some weight to the sound.

What unfiltered37 described can very easily be done with the Voyager also. Just select Noise in one of the Mod Buss as the Source, and select Filt or Pitch as destination, and control the amount...

Yeah, but that is white noise, which is not that great as a modulator. Red/Brown noise, at least on the model D, does something subtle, but very musical to the oscillators (when used in small amounts), especially with multiple oscillators detuned to musical intervals. It seems to blur the oscillators, so they sound like one sound source rather than 3 separate sources. It also takes some of the top end off the filter. Subtle, but very musically useful.

White noise as a mod seems to just add noise to the audio, which can be cool, but doesn't do anything special to the sound IMO. The pink noise on the model D is cool too, but it doesn't have that wonderful airy haze the red noise has.

Ah yes, I had forgotten that the modulation uses red noise on the Minimoog D.
Then, using the VX351 or even CP251 wouldn't work well either since they both output white noise too...

Running the noise source through a MoogerFooger 101 Low Pass Filter and then back into the Voyager will definitely help. It's not pink or red noise at that point, though it is weighted more in that direction.
