I refuse to grow up, thus neatly bypass any 'senior moments'... :)

Just a little update and another question..

Kevin's Opto-key it's here! Just waiting for a new set of key bushings and the refinished cabinet to put it back together.
Now, since i have the mini in parts, any advice for how to clean a dirty pot?

Hey guys

Just wanna share the result, and say thanks for all the advice i got here.
The Minimoog Model D really is a special instrument, and i also feel special for having the chance to own one.
Many thanks also to Kevin Lightner for the advice, for some rare parts and for selling me the very last Opto-key!

Thanks!

Good news about the Opto-key, it's a stunning system.
Do you know if it will be available for other synths? Arp Odyssey comes to mind.. 8)

I don't know. You'd have to ask the new owner of the Opto-Key project, Chris Hewitt. But I doubt it for now, since he has just recently acquired the rights from Kevin, and he is currently concentrating on assembling new boards for eventual new customers, and upgrading the firmware to correct some minor bugs (only for MIDI equipped models).

No doubt though that this solution would benefit other Pratt-Reed buss bar and springs contact keyboards on other vintage synths, like ARP and others too. There is hope, since Chris has the source code for the firmware and has a degree in electronics to adapt the design to other models.

BTW, how did you finally manage to clean the sealed Allen-Bradley pots on your Mini ? I did clean the mod wheel one on mine, by dismantling it (not easy to open) and reversing the carbon wiper (it was worn more on one side than the other). But all the other ones that were "scratchy" cleaned themselves with dozens of end-to-end rotation using the friction of the internal carbon wiper. I was lucky.

I wonder if there will be a 5 octave version - for my Modular's 951 keyboard...?
How do we contact Chris Hewitt...?

Cheers,
Tom

Hello Tom, there is a link labeled "contact" (on the bottom right) on his web site, called "This Old Synth" (just google it), where you can send an email to Chris. I guess it could be possible to cover bigger keyboards (more than 44 keys) but not without adding some additional hardware, since all the input lines of the microcontroller are already in use on the current Opto-Key.

Cheers,
Alain.
